Assisting Minister Responsibilities during the worship service:
- Meet with the Pastor before the service (Saturday, 4:45 p.m.; Sunday, 10:05 p.m.)
- Process in with the Pastor and the choir
- Offer Intercessory Prayers You can use the prayers sent to you during the week or write your own, or provide a combination of both. Always include a prayer for the local churches listed on your prayer sheet and, if possible, include some silence to allow the congregation to offer their own prayers.
- Help the acolytes with the set-up of the communion on the altar Only one plate of bread (called a platen) and one chalice of wine should be placed in the center of the altar. All other items should be set to the right side of the white cloth in the center of the altar. Make sure the wine is up and to the left to avoid accidental spills.
- Lead the Offering Prayer after the offering is brought forward by the acolyte (Hymnal, Setting One, page 107)
- Assist with the distribution of the communion When there is only one station (at the front or around the altar rail) the pastor
distributes the bread and the assisting minister distributes the wine. When there are double stations, the assisting minister and the pastor distribute the bread and the additional communion assistants distribute the wine. - Lead the Post-communion Prayer (Hymnal, Setting One, page 114)
- Recess to the back of the church with the pastor
- Offer the Dismissal (Hymnal, Setting One, page 115)
- Greet congregation members at the back of the church as they leave
